Team Coco Hits The Road

Last Thursday night I went to see Conan O’Brien’s Legally Prevented From Being Funny on Television show. I’ve been a Conan fan for a long time, so I was really excited when he announced this tour.

This show sold out crazy-quick. It was kind of weird how the tickets went on sale – they started selling them in the morning and announced the tour right before lunch. I was lucky to see the announcement in a blog posting before the show sold out. 15 minutes after I got my ticket, there were no more to be had. So I felt pretty lucky.

I wanted to be surprised by the show, so I didn’t read much about the prior stops on the tour. I figured that there would be a lot of stuff that carried over from show to show.

It was kind of like an old-fashioned variety show, but with cussing. There was music, standup, and some taped bits. I guess you could describe it as a live version of Conan’s television shows without the interviews. I really enjoyed it, and the rest of the crowd seemed to as well. I wish they had been able to do some kind of live action taped bit that was filmed around town, but I understand that they probably don’t have time for that kind of thing with their schedule. Overall, a big thumbs up!

Andy Richter does a fake commercial for a local liquor barn.

Conan claimed that this was the actual bat from Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell tour.

Conan in his Eddie Murphy "Raw" suit.

Conan demonstrating how flat his butt is. "You could iron a shirt on that thing!"

Don't ask.

Andy Richter performed a number on horseback.

One of Conan's writers did a brief standup bit.

Conan broke out his guitar for a few songs.

Return of the bat.

The masturbating bear made a cameo.

The big finale.

The Conrad Bain cutout was not for sale, alas.

Here are a couple of videos that I shot. The Triumph one probably isn't as funny if you aren't from Dallas. The Walker Texas Ranger stuff owns, though.

Flight of the Conchords

A couple of weeks ago I went to see a band that I have been really wanting to see for a little over a year now – Flight of the Conchords. I missed seeing them last year when I was in DC for the Radiohead show because I didn’t know they were in town until it was sold out, and I didn’t want to pay the high scalper prices I saw. Anyway, I was very happy when I found out that the Conchords were coming to Dallas on their current tour.

I really wanted to bring my camera because my seat was in the 5th row, right in the center. Camera rules at concerts are so schizo – the venue’s website said “no cameras”, but there was a PA announcement outside the venue that cameras without detachable lenses were allowed. Some places don’t care, and camera phones are used just about everywhere (I don’t have one). I brought mine along to see if I could get it in, but the lady at the door wasn’t having it. She told me without hesitation that my camera wouldn’t be allowed. Seeing as how I decided she was the one most likely to let me in, I didn’t try at the other entrances and I took it back to my car. So, the outside photo below is the only one I took. Boring!

The comedy at this show started early. The older man who scanned my ticket saw the Charlie Brown T-shirt I was wearing and said “I haven’t seen a Snoopy costume in years.”

The place was pretty packed. I was surprised to find out that the show was a sellout. I guess I didn’t know that FOTC appealed to so many people.

The opening act was Eugene Mirman, who plays the landlord on the FOTC TV show. He did a bit of standup, and it was pretty funny. He ended by telling a great bit about his experience with Delta losing his luggage, the capper of which is that he used the money they gave him to buy a bunch of postcards with a hilarious rant that he wrote on them. He hands them out at shows for people to send to Delta. I snagged a couple, and you can see scanned images below. I was a little disappointed that Kristen Schaal, who plays Mel on the show, didn’t appear on this stop.

After Eugene left the stage, the boys came out with their robot heads on and played “Too Many Dicks On The Dance Floor”. They put on a great show. Bret & Jemaine are ace comedians (if it isn’t obvious from their show & their songs). They did a great deal of between-song banter that was just as funny as their songs, and it also displayed their improv chops as they riffed on current events or some of the people in the audience. I love their deadpan and dry sense of humor. The crowd was really into everything – they laughed a lot. It felt a little weird that everyone was sitting down for most of the show up until the encore.

Beyond being comedians they are really good musicians too. Only one other musician joined them on stage. Nigel the cello player, or “The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra”, came out after the third or fourth song. Bret played the drums on “Mutha’uckas”, but other than that it was mostly guitar and cello. They played a lot of songs that were new to me, because I haven’t seen season 2 of the show yet . The vocals were quite good and matched up with the records very well, with some nice little improvs thrown in now and then. One song that they didn’t play that I missed was “Robots”, but overall I was pleased with the setlist. Some of the highlights for me were “Hurt Feelings”, “The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room)”, “I Told You I was Freekie”, “Not Crying”, “Think About It”, “Hiphopopotamus vs.Rhymenoceros”, “Albi The Racist Dragon”, and “Bowie”. The show was about 2 hours overall including the two one-song encores. Of course I would’ve been happy if they had played 3 hours or more, but I didn’t feel ripped off at all.

If you’re into the Conchords their live show is well worth seeing.

Radiohead Rocks It Marching Band Style

Did you all see Radiohead on the Grammys the other night? Being the big Radiohead geek that I am, I watched the Grammys so I could see them perform. Other than hearing that they would be playing, I hadn't read anything about the performance beforehand, so I was really surprised when they played "15 Step" with some of the USC marching band. And actually, it was just Thom and Jonny playing with the USC band, so I guess it was "Radiohead". I wasn't sure what to think when I first saw this. I liked it, but I wasn't sure if I loved it. But the more I listen to it the more I like it. The video I'm embedding of this version kind of stinks, but Youtube has pulled all theirs all due to copyright so this is the only one I could find. The audio is pretty good. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Staying in the musical realm here, it's been a really dry season as far as concerts go, but things are starting to pick up a bit. I haven't been to a show since Cat Power back in October. I was thrilled to learn last week that Flight of the Conchords will be coming to Dallas in May. And I got a 5th row seat right in the center section! I really can't wait for this show. I also will be going to see Bruce Springsteen in Austin in April. I saw him for the first time last April, and he made me a fan with his show. I'm also considering going to see Lykke Li next week. I'm not all that familiar with her stuff, but I like what I've heard so far.

Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!

This past week I watched the Charlie Brown Christmas Special for the first time in several years. I had forgotten how much I liked it. It's just so perfect. It's a masterful blend of humor, pathos, contemplation, and joy. Who can't identify with Charlie Brown's disappointment at his empty mailbox? Or his dismay at the commercialization of Christmas? It moves at a pace that would be unthinkable in today's post-video-game world of cartoons, but I like that. It definitely suits the material. And that soundtrack is amazing.

I saw a link this week to an interesting article published in 2000 about the special. It seems that CBS hated it when they first saw it, and it almost didn't make it to air. Can you imagine that, knowing how beloved this show is now?

I also saw a really funny parody called Charlie Brown Ad Agency, which is posted below. This is how this show would be done today. And remember, people kid because they love.

Giraffes!

This was on Saturday Night Live a couple of weeks ago, and it really made me laugh. Giraffes!

By the way, is Hulu not the shiznet? I no longer have to worry about whether I remembered to record The Office or The Simpsons since you can watch full episodes. Greatness.

You're a Donkey. I Like That.

Nothing much all that exciting going on these days. I'm looking for a library job. I've applied to several, but I haven't gotten any positive responses yet. Seems like a really great time to look for a job, no? I'm very thankful that I am currently employed. The idea of moving somewhere else and having to sell my house in this market does not sound appealing right now.

I'm slowly getting up to speed on the new computer. I have moved most of the important stuff from the old one. I'm in the process of learning some of the quirks of Windows Vista. So far I haven't found anything absolutely awful about it, although it seems to be kind of a pain in the butt to find the button to shut down the computer. I'm having to hit CONTROL-ALT-DELETE and then click on the button. Surely there has to be a short cut somewhere. (UPDATE - Found it! Why do they change stupid stuff like that?)

In totally unrelated news, the following skit was on Saturday Night Live last weekend, and I thought it was really funny:

Radiohead Does Dallas

OK, so finally here is my account of Radiohead-A-Palooza Day 3: Dallas.

I got extremely lucky when the presale tickets went on sale for the Dallas show and was able to get a ticket in the general admission pit right in front of the stage. As it has turned out this has been the only show at which I was able to get a pit ticket. Of course any time that you have a ticket up front the ultimate situation would be to have a spot right up against the barrier in front of the stage. However, due to the popularity of Radiohead I didn’t think this was going to be an option for me. On the RH message board that I frequent, there were people talking about how they were going to go directly from the Houston show to Dallas so they could get in line for the pit run. There was just no way I was going to do something like that, so I had to decide how early to arrive. Originally I was going to drive in from Houston on Sunday and go straight to the venue to get in line, but as the time approached I really didn’t feel like doing that. So I went home for a couple of hours, went grocery shopping, and relaxed for a bit. (Later on, I found out that people left straight from Houston right after that show, went to the venue in Dallas, and there were already people camped out there! Crazy!)

While I was at the store I decided to try to help my back out by buying some insoles for my shoes. Gah, I sound like an old man talking about this crap. All of this back worry was precipitated by my experience at the Bob Dylan show in February. After standing for about 4 hours total for that show, my back killed me for about a month afterward. I really didn’t want a repeat of that experience. So I bought these Dr. Scholl’s insoles that I hoped would save my back after standing at the concert. It doesn’t get any more rock and roll than that.

I ended up getting there at about 7:00 for the 7:30 start time for the opening act. I decided that I was going to try again to bring in my big camera since the worst that could happen was that they would say “No”. When I got up to the gate the lady asked to look inside my camera bag so I opened it. She looked inside briefly and then let me in. Woo-hoo! I took the opportunity to make a final pre-show restroom stop and water fountain run, and then I headed for the pit.

When I got inside the walls of the venue, I was happy to see that the pit was fairly sparsely populated. All of the barrier space in front of the actual stage area was taken, and there was a decent-sized cluster of people in the dead-center of the space. I was also happy to see that there were seats at the back of the pit. Wanting to minimize my standing time, I grabbed a seat at the back and soon the opening act started. I took some shots with my camera to get an idea of how close I should try to get. I decided to stay seated until right before Radiohead came on.

I actually talked to some of the people around me after the opening act finished up. I mention this because it is not always a given that this will happen (like, for example, the previous night). Sometimes I’m OK with not saying anything. The 45 minute wait for Radiohead seemed to go by pretty quickly, and as soon as I heard the bleep/bloop music I got up and pressed forward as far as I could. The pit had filled in some during the wait. I was probably about the equivalent of maybe 5 rows back from the barrier on the left side of the stage. I could see pretty well, although in retrospect I wish I had staked out a spot a little earlier because there were a few people in front of me whose heads would get in the way of some of my shots. Overall it turned out to be a very mellow pit experience. No pushing and shoving, and they didn’t overcrowd it, so there was plenty of room for everyone.

It was really cool to be that close. It was almost like seeing them in a smaller venue because you could kind of block out everyone who was behind you. Based on the high I got from the previous night’s show, my expectations were pretty high. As the show started out, it looked like it might be a little bit of a letdown. The energy level just seemed kind of low. I started wondering if maybe the band was tired since this was the last show on this leg of the tour, and only the second time so far that they had performed on a consecutive night. I remember thinking that it was not going to match the Houston show, but at least I could get some decent photos. Something happened though when they launched into “National Anthem”. Things seemed to perk up a bit, and there was a steady build from there on out.

Right after “National Anthem” they played “Dollars and Cents”, which was a first for this tour. They also broke out “A Wolf at the Door”, which was great. As the show went along it seemed like both the band and the crowd was feeding off of each other’s energy, which is really how a good show works. Being that close I could see how the guys (particularly Ed since he was closest to me) were reacting to some of the things that the crowd was doing, which was really cool. Both Ed and Thom got big smiles when the crowd did the “Hey!” part in “15 Step” that the kids do on the record. Throughout I was struck by Thom’s voice – it’s pretty much the voice that you get on the records. When “Idioteque” started up I got out the small camera so I could record it and make up for my recording error the previous night.

The first encore started with “Fake Plastic Trees”, which I also recorded (along with probably everyone else there who had a camera). A couple of songs after that they played one I’d really been hoping to hear, “Exit Music (For a Film)”, and it was amazing even though some douche shouted out THOMMEE! during one of the quiet parts and Thom was disturbed enough by it to respond. They closed out the first encore with “The Bends”, which was a nice surprise. For the second encore I got the chance to redeem my other recording misfire, “You and Whose Army?”, and then they closed out with “Paranoid Android”. The crowd was absolutely nuts during the encores. There was kind of a tease of a third encore because it took a really long time for the house lights to come up, but they eventually did.

It turned out to be a really great show, one of the best I have ever seen. Some of the people on the message board who have been to many, many Radiohead shows have said it was either their favorite or among their favorite Radiohead shows ever. Radiohead has a reputation as a great live band, and after seeing them 3 times I have to say that that reputation is well-deserved. It’s truly a more-than-just-the-sum-of-their-parts sort of thing; there’s something very compelling about what happens when these guys play together.

For some reason I was absolutely convinced that there was something wrong with the lights in Dallas. They just didn’t seem nearly as bright as they had at the other two shows I attended. Looking back at the photos, though, I think that maybe it was a function of how close I was that made them seem different. I’m thinking that maybe since I had to actually look up to see the whole length of the light tubes that that made them look different. Before I could see the entire length of the lights and the stage in my field of vision, and I think that made them seem brighter.

Below are some of the photos I took. Apparently the whole show can be seen on Youtube, including many videos shot by a guy who was right up front, with the sole exception of “Dollars and Cents”. Wish I’d thought to record that one! Here is a link to a local blog that collected the videos to each song (in order!) into one post (so if you have a couple of hours to kill...): Dallas Observer DC9 At Night Blog.

Oh, and my back? Sound as a pound. That was $6 very well spent. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go drink my Metamucil.

Packing Schmacking

Man, I'm wigging out. I hate getting ready to travel. I hate packing. I don't know why, but I don't like it. And I'm only going to be gone for 5 days, it's not like I'm going to the moon.

I can't wait to get there, but I hate that both Holli and Faith are ill at the moment. Hopefully they will both be on the mend soon!

This video has nothing to do with anything other than I think it's really funny. This news anchor recently moved to Dallas to do one of the morning news shows. So of course, this video has gotten some notice around here. It's a giggle!

You Are Feeling Sleepy...

I had hoped to have a concert review up by now, but I want to be able to do the experience justice so I'm still working on it. In the meantime, here is a 60 Minutes report that aired a few weeks ago that I thought was really interesting. It's broken up into 2 videos, and they are kind of long at 13 minutes a piece but well worth a look. This is a topic that I have talked about before, namely that of getting enough sleep. I think it's one of the most important things you can do to stay healthy. In this video one of the scientists actually hypothesizes that lack of adequate sleep can make you age faster. The bit towards the end with the fruit flies is kind of interesting too. I know I feel like a real dumbass and like there's something wrong with me when I don't get enough sleep. If you don't feel like watching these videos, then you can always click on the most awesomest link ever!

Black Is The New President?

This was on Saturday Night Live last weekend, and it really made me laugh. Especially the part about how he would answer the phone at 3AM. I apologize for the short commercial at the beginning, but the video quality on the official version is way better than on Youtube.

I'm off to concert-land. Those crazy gypsy punks are back! I hope my back holds up!

Bob Part 2 - Electric Boogaloo

I'm really struggling to write something today. In fact, I'm struggling to do anything. Yesterday was really busy since I had to work for 6 hours at the library and then I went to the concert. Today I reacted to this by waking up at 11 and just lazing about. I'm not even enthusiastic about watching the Oscars tonight. I guess there's nothing too terribly wrong with all this, but it makes me feel guilty sometimes (the lazing about, not the non Oscar watching). In any event, I'm going to try and press on with a concert review.

I got the House of Blues about 45 minutes before doors were supposed to open. I wanted to try and get up by the barrier in front of the stage if I could, but I didn't want to show up 3 hours ahead of time. I wish I had been just a tad earlier, because I ended up right behind the barrier people, about the equivalent of second row (it was SRO on the floor). I had a great view though.

The crowd was a mix of older and younger people, although it may have been the whitest crowd I've ever seen at a concert (not that that really matters). I didn't feel much like chatting with anyone, so I didn't. There was about an hour to wait before the show was supposed to start, but it seemed to pass by pretty quickly.

The show started out with a reformatted version of Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. Bob was on guitar for the first 3 numbers before retreating behind the keyboards he has favored the last few years. During the very first song a girl climbed up on the stage right past the security guard and ran over to Bob's microphone. She just stood there looking at Bob before security hustled her off. I hope that was $60 well-spent for her. She left her faux fur wrap hanging on the barricade and it was still there after the show. There's a video below of the incident. I'm just glad she wasn't a psycho with ill intent.

So the big question with Bob is always "what about the voice?". Perhaps I was the beneficiary of low expectations, but I thought he sounded much better than the last time I saw him. There was more range, power, and depth to his voice than the show I went to almost 2 years ago. None of the words seemed to get caught in his throat this time. He even hit a couple of semi-high notes. The first Dallas show on Thursday was Bob's first since early November, so maybe the time off did his voice some good. I thought Bob's energy level seemed higher too.

I thought the sound in general was better than the last show too. The instruments all seemed to be balanced pretty well with nothing sounding too loud. He played a lot of songs from his latest album, which were mostly in a blues-type of vein. We got some good harmonica solos too. As usual there wasn't much interaction with the crowd. He mumbled something after the first song that I couldn't understand, and later he said something about "thanks for coming out to this venue". He also introduced the band at one point. At the end of the show the band was standing in the middle of the stage to say farewell and it took forever for the lights to get turned on. They stood there in the dark for awhile before the lights finally came up. The crowd seemed pretty into the show. Overall I thought it was a great show and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Based on this experience I am definitely interested in seeing him again if given the opportunity.

Here's the video with the girl running up to Bob:

Jukebox

The new Cat Power album, Jukebox, is out. It’s an album of cover songs, including one of her own songs. There is a deluxe version with a second CD with 5 songs. This is the album that she was in Dallas to record part of last August, and now I recognize some of the songs that I heard in concert. Recognizing a Cat Power cover is not always an automatic proposition. She definitely puts her own stamp on others’ songs. Her version of New York is amazing. My only complaint is that at 2 minutes it’s way too short.

Let’s see, there are also covers of Hank Williams, James Brown, Joni Mitchell, Billie Holliday, The Highwaymen, Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, Nick Cave, and Bob Dylan. After having a month to listen to this album I’m really, really digging it. That voice just slays me, and the way that she makes these songs her own is amazing. The guitar sound is great too – it’s textbook Telecaster. Some of my favorite songs on here are New York, Metal Heart, Silver Stallion, I Believe In You, and Breathless. You can hear samples on the Amazon page, and her MySpace page has one complete song from this album – Song For Bobby (about Dylan). I just found out a couple of days ago that CP is coming to Dallas in April. I am so there. Concert bills are steadily adding up, but that’s a post for another day.

Speaking of Bob Dylan and concerts, I’m actually going to see him in concert Saturday night. I know I wasn’t all that impressed with the first time I saw him, but this is Bob Dylan! That guy who wrote all those amazing songs has got to be in there somewhere. He’s playing three nights in Dallas at the House of Blues. I wanted to see him in a smaller venue than last time. Interesting review of night one here.

Here's a video of Cat Power's performance of New York on Jools Holland's show:

Random S

OK, this post is a bit scattered, but then so am I.

*Last night I was taking a breather in my backyard when I noticed a cardinal that had a bald head. It was completely bald except for one little feather sticking up where the crest would normally be. It kind of freaked me out and my first thought was that maybe it had some type of illness. I did a little research, however, and thankfully it looks like this is just a rare example of how some birds molt (grow new feathers every year). There’s a good article about it here. And it’s a good thing for the propagation of the cardinal species, methinks, that this takes place after the breeding season. Cuz you know, it’s not a good look for Mrs. Cardinal.

* I really couldn’t give two shits about the iPhone. Mostly because I can’t afford one even if I wanted one. But those commercials are pretty damn cool.

* I highly recommend watching "Extras" to any fans of British comedy out there. In fact, I also recommend it to fans of comedy in general. I had watched season 1 when it came out on HBO,but I had to wait for season 2 on DVD and it just came out. I proclaim season 2 to be the British "Curb Your Enthusiasm". If you can watch the David Bowie scene in episode 2 without laughing out loud, I'll pay you a dollar.

* I have Arrested Development on the brain again, thanks to Kit. So here's some Franklin!

I Hope They Cover "Mouth Full of Sores"

Well, assuming I don't get hit by a bus I will be attending The Police concert in June. I paid more than I really wanted to, but them's the breaks. I'm just excited to be going!

I now present a couple of videos from the great Mr. Show. The first time I saw this a few years ago, I couldn't stop laughing for days. And now that I've watched it again about 20 times, it's stuck in my head again. The first video is actually an excerpt from the second one, so if you're strapped for time just watch the first one. It's a hilarious Brian Wilson parody.

If you see any of these people, wish them a happy birthday:

Betrayal Five

The yakkety-yaks at work are driving me nuts today! Thank Jebus for headphones.

I'm going to have to make a decision about Police tickets today, and it looks like it's going to be quite an expensive proposition. I would think my best chance at getting tickets would be to get in on the fan club presale, which starts tomorrow, but the fan club costs money to join. Then you still have the ticket price to pay. So do I pay a pretty penny for a guaranteed ticket or do I take my chances with scalpers trying to unload excess inventory in front of the arena? Decisions, decisions.

I posted about this scene on Scrubs when it aired last year, but there was no video at that time. Well, now there is. This scene really cracks me up.

Today's birthdays:
