Organic on a Budget

Multiple post alert!

I believe in eating organic food whenever I can, but when you're on a budget that isn't always easy. One thing organic foods are not is cheap. The February issue of Consumer Reports had a very interesting article along these lines. The basic gist of the article is that there are some foods that you should buy organic as much as possible, and some others that you might be able to skip if you're trying to save money. They also have a couple of items that they don't recommend buying organic at all. The recommendation part of the report can be found here.

I do the organic produce and dairy but since I don't eat meat, it's not too expensive. I skip the organic hair, beauty, and paper products when on a budget for sure. You do what you can and that's all that matters.

We go in and out of organic buying. I do have a fruit/vegs share in an organic co-op although sometimes I look in the bag and think I paid $$ for this??

Nathan!!!! That darn cat!

At least I can understand him eating the fennel lip balm more than I can eating magic markers! I pretty much wanted to eat the fennel lip balm too.

Milk is probably the one thing I have been the most consistent about buying organic. That BGH stuff freaks me out. I have backslid a little bit on the yogurt, though, the organic stuff isn't as good and doesn't have as many flavors to choose from.

I don't cook very much meat at home, but I think buying organic is worth it with meat. I really don't want to eat the meat of a creature that was fed sewage sludge. Although I'm sure the crawfish I ate last night ate tons of horrible shit (probably literally) before their untimely demise. Well, you can't win 'em all. I don't buy a lot of produce, I need to eat more produce and less processed foods.

For now I am still sticking with the personal care stuff that has the most natural ingredients possible, but it doesn't have to be completely organic. That stuff does get pretty expensive, though. But then so are cancer treatments. :D
